I can’t tell if I’m running away from or toward myself
my pink legs
my blue heart
and my silly old head
still working out the start

(send us a note if you know the artist of the piece)
his frantic fingers run all over me
my belly bubbles
my teeth shake
the heat of his hands
melt my mouth
all I want is to burn
and burn
and never let him out
“He’s So Heavy” by Meaghan Merrifield
Artwork by tchmo
green grass smothers fallen leaves
the willow smiles as the daisies weep
summer sun is meant to be sweet
yet cities grow and growl
roots rise and limbs wither
broken bottle screams sink into honey thick dreams
and the beginning crashes into the middle
“Up High to Down Deep” by Meaghan Merrifield
Artwork by Ceren Kilic
With a tongue sharp
and unafraid
I pierce
through
muted in-betweens
scarlet hues
through
browns and blues
with only modesty
to lose
“A Voice without a Veil” by Angie Hoover-Hillhouse
Artwork: “Wildlife” by The White Deer
leafless birch trees stretch across the line
between the past
and the present.
Memories caught in between
slip through,
blossoming like moonflowers
in the cover of evening.
And there, below,
with time as my halo,
I bay
like a hound
mourning the day
“Night Howl” by Angie Hoover-Hillhouse
Artwork by Sarah Cruce
Sons and daughters follow close
in footsteps stained with tragedy
I make dull your brilliant shades
of joy and wondrous honesty
You’ll see me soon
a cool disgrace
naked in the blaze of day
my cowardice
my slow deceit
upon your limbs like brown decay
but on this morn
I’m strong and bold
a hero in your books and hymns
a face of calm
that won’t betray
my dears,
remember me this way
“The Father” by Angie Hoover-Hillhouse
Artwork by Sammy Slabbinck
That foolish heart
that quakes and quivers
fears and fancies
futilely
for fate affirms
that it must fall
to fix
a feast
of florid fare
